Deferred Candidates
A "defer" in Early Decision signifies that the admissions committee knows you have been successful in high school and you have great potential for succeeding in college, perhaps at Dartmouth. In most years, about one-third of the Early Decision applicants are deferred. Typically, less than 10 % of applicants who are deferred during Early Decision are later offered admission during the regular admissions process.
We may defer an applicant because we want to see mid-year grades or other updates. Applicants deferred during Early Decision should submit a Mid-Year Report and may want to provide an additional personal update to the admission committee about new developments since they submitted their ED applications. Please follow our general guidelines for additional applicant updates. Late January is typically a good time to submit these updates.
