A poetic inquiry into the tragedy of lost youth and the power of memory.

Bilingual Edition.

In these lyrical tributes to Anne Frank's courage and individualism, Chilean poet Marjorie Agosín captures the wrenching paradox of the young diarist's unshakable love of life, a love which endured unspeakable horrors. In this bilingual collection, first published in 1994, Agosín makes the girl's humanity palpable even as it damns the inhumanity of those who perpetrated the destruction around her.

From the Book:

Anne Frank
when you were just
thirteen
you knew death was stalking you;
you were attentive
to its signs,
those fists banging on the shadowy doors.

MARJORIE AGOSÍN is Professor of Spanish at Wellesley College, and author of Uncertain Travelers: Conversations with Jewish Women Immigrants to America (1999, a volume in the Brandeis Series on Jewish Women), Always from Somewhere Else: My Jewish Father (1998), Ashes of Revolt (1996), A Cross and a Star: Memoirs of a Jewish Girl in Chile (1995), and 18 books of poetry, fiction, and short stories. In 1995 she received First Prize for Poetry from Letras de Oro and the Latino Literature Prize.
