Spotlight...

Associate Prof.
Barrett Rogers

Following the completion his PhD degree in Physics from MIT in 1991, Professor Rogers went on to research positions at MIT under a DOE Postdoctoral Fellowship Award and the University of Maryland, College Park. He joined the Dartmouth faculty in the fall of 2001. His research field is theoretical and computational plasma physics and his ongoing work addresses a range of topics in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas, including magnetic reconnection, plasma turbulence, and magnetically confined fusion. Professor Rogers's research group is supported at the national level by research grants from NSF, DOE, and NASA. He is the Dartmouth Principal Investigator for the Center for Integrated Computation and Analysis of Reconnection and Turbulence (CICART), a collaboration between Dartmouth and the University of New Hampshire, as well as a co-investigator for the DOE Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics, the NSF Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling, and NASA's Sun-Earth Connection Theory program.

Welcome to the Department of Physics & Astronomy!

From the Chairman,

We in Physics and Astronomy are committed to the goal of combining the excitement of a research university with the sense of community one finds at a small college. By focusing on a few core areas - astronomy and cosmology, quantum and condensed matter physics, plasma and space physics - we provide a selection of independent research opportunities as well as an array of specialized courses and research seminars in addition to the core courses. We place a high priority on teaching and mentorship at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Whether you wish to pursue a career in Physics/Astronomy, or study it enroute to a career elsewhere, we think you will find a welcoming environment here.Jay Lawrence's Signature

Celebrate the Season of Giving by helping feed local families! The Graduate Student Council is sponsoring our second annual food drive to benefit the Upper Valley Haven Food Shelf. The Haven is a private, non-profit organization providing emergency shelter, food, clothing, and educational programming to those in need. You can check them out at http://www.uppervalleyhaven.org There is a donation box conveniently located in the department office so please donate!! We will be collecting your nonperishable donations until Dec. 11th.
