Using Public ResourcesMany computing resources are provided for the use of members of the Dartmouth community. Connecting from On and Off CampusComputing Services maintains an extensive campus network that allows members of the Dartmouth community access to other computers on the network and to the Internet. The campus network can be accessed from both on and off campus. Public ComputersClusters of public Macintosh, Dell and UNIX computers are available at many locations around campus for use by Dartmouth faculty, students and staff. Public PrintingLaser printers are available for use by members of the Dartmouth community via the Dartmouth network. Public ScanningSeveral resource centers make available scanners for use by members of the Dartmouth community. Use of the production equipment is for academic projects only. Commercial and profit-making projects are prohibited. KeyServed SoftwareDartmouth provides site-licensed software for use by members of the Dartmouth community. This software ranges from commonly-used desktop applications to fairly specific research applications. Use of this software is controlled by a "KeyServer" which controls the number of people who have access to a specific application at one time. Spam FilteringDartmouth uses a product called SpamAssassin to filter spam. BlitzMail or third party e-mail applications that are configured to use IMAP can use this filtering system. SpamAssassin does not stop any e-mail from getting to you; it simply allows you to have most spam messages go directly into a folder within your e-mail account rather than cluttering up your inbox. You can then periodically review the messages in that folder and decide whether or not to delete them. Instructional FacilitiesThere are several instructional facilities located in various areas around campus where hands-on computer instruction can take place. Personal Storage on Network ServersDartmouth provides each faculty, student and staff member with a folder on a public server for storage of personal files. These files can then be retrieved from any computer connected to the network. Public ServersOn Dartmouth's network, there are numerous public file servers that store a wide variety of data, programs, and utilities. Many of these servers are accessible to all members of the Dartmouth community. Resource CentersThere are several computing resource centers for use by members of the Dartmouth community. These centers provide a supervised environment in which to obtain assistance about specialized equipment and software.
