William Ghezzi - Guitarist
Guitarists William Newman and William Ghezzi have been performing together since 1981. As members of the Philadelphia Guitar Ensemble they enthusiastically worked to expand the chamber music repertoire for guitar. They have transcribed numerous works for two, three, and four guitars, including pieces by Domenico Scarlatti, W.A. Mozart, Maurice Ravel, Antonio Vivaldi, Béla Bartok and many others.
In addition, they have commissioned and premiered new pieces for guitars by John Binder, Kile Smith and Daniel Nightingale. Two of their commissioned works, Fantasia by Jan Krzywicki and Duo for Two Guitars by Robert Capanna, have been published by Theodore Presser Company. Most recently they have been involved in a collaboration with flutist Veronica Mascaro.
They have performed on college campuses, concert series and on radio and television. Currently their program includes works by Domenico Scarlatti, Joseph Haydn, Manual Ponce, Frederico Mompou and Joaquin Rodrigo
William Newman attended the University of Michigan and holds degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Temple University where he studied with Peter Segal. He has given recitals in the U.S and Europe and performed as soloist and with many chamber groups including the Philadelphia Guitar Ensemble, the Harry Partch Ensemble, the Philadelphia Baroque Ensemble, the Alliance Trio, the Encore Chamber Players, and the Newman/Ghezzi Guitar Duo. Mr. Newman's commissions of new works and transcriptions of chamber music with guitar have been performed in many recital settings. He can be heard on the recordings The Philadelphia Guitar Ensemble, and Revelation in The Courthouse Park. Currently he teaches at Muhlenberg College in Allentown Pa., and privately in the Philadelphia area.
William Ghezzi has performed with orchestras, chamber ensembles, dance companies, in theater and opera, and for radio and television. He has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Harry Partch Ensemble, the Philadelphia Guitar Ensemble and in many other chamber music settings. Mr. Ghezzi received a Bachelor of Music degree from Temple University, College of Music where he studied with Peter Segal and Anna Kotsaranko. He has studied privately with Phillip de Fremery, Eliot Fisk and Vladimir Mikulka. Mr. Ghezzi has been on the music faculties of Temple University, Chestnut Hill College and Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. In 1990 he received a Master of Science degree from Drexel University College of Information Studies. Currently he is Cataloging & Metadata Services Librarian at Dartmouth College and teaches privately in his home in Hanover, New Hampshire where he lives with his wife and two daughters.
