The Dartmouth figure skating
team was all smiles after winning its third straight victory at the U.S. Intercollegiate Team
Skating Championships on April 2. Competing at San José State University in
California, the 14 members of Dartmouth's team placed first in eight events and
scored 96 points for the win, 37 points ahead of second place Boston
University.

"This championship is a tremendous honor for all of us and the
College," says Coach Loren McGean '92. The
team has the benefit of top-notch coaching from McGean and her father, J. Michael McGean '49,
former secretary of the college at Dartmouth and the 1950 World Ice Dancing
Champion, a title he won with his wife, the late Lois Waring McGean '84.

The young team (it was founded in 1997) boasts an impressive roster of
talent. Four team members—Katie Collins '06, Dan Dittrick '08, Taylor Grant
'06, and Nicole Newman '08—are gold-medal level skaters. "A gold medalist
has gone through years of practice and testing to earn the top level of
achievement. The U.S. Figure Skating tests are an increasingly difficult series
of programs and routines, judged by a panel of nationally trained judges,"
says McGean.
The team wrapped up its undefeated season with a special exhibition
performance on April 9, offered in conjunction with the Upper Valley United Way, to thank the community
for its generous support.
