Pain Train 2006

Fall 2005 Information:

A-team selection TENTATIVE schedule

So now a stickier topic.  Basically, we wanted to give people a sense of how we're going to make the A/B team split this year.  It is tough as captains to draw the line between development of this year's team and development of future years.  We've decided to do the following, although know that this schedule is not set in stone.  For the first 1-2 weeks or so of school, all practices will be mixed.  More experienced guys will help out the new and younger guys learn and polish their fundamentals.  We'll teach the basic concepts of throwing, catching, cutting, man defense, marking, and offensive and defensive strategy.  We'll run drills together and scrimmage together.

After this initial period, we will start to split the practice days.  We'll mix A/B half of the time and split the two the other half of the time.  We will, however, always try to end practice no later than 6:00 or sometimes even earlier to allow A and B guys to play pick-up.  (During this time Dan and I will also hold "office hours", a time when you are all welcome to come talk to us to give us feedback on the team or express a concern.  It will also be the time when we plan the next practice, so you can let us know if you have any ideas you have about drills or scrimmages.)  Also, we will always send at least 2 returning A-teamers down to the B-team practices to help out and teach.

A-team tryouts will be held around the 2nd or 3rd week of the term.  The tryouts will likely be similar to normal practices but tougher physically.  There will probably also be some timed sprints involved.  After the tryouts, we'll narrow our A-team practice squad to between 20-25 people.  Please not that we will narrow the squad again in the winter or spring when off-campus folks get back.

There are over 40 tryouts this year.  That is a big number.  This team will be a tough team to crack.  We will be looking not just at ability but also potential, athleticism, dedication, and attitude.  Sometime before the tryouts we'll hold a meeting for all of those interested and go over the whole procedure more specifically.

If you would like to play on the A-team and have not been added to my list, please let me know now.

 Fall commitment

Which brings us to what we expect from the team this fall.  Obviously, everyone has to find their own way to balance ultimate in his life.  But when you're making decisions about your schedule, keep in mind that fall is a very important season, both in terms of your improvement as an individual player, and how we can grow as a team.  In both cases, your commitment to coming to practice and tournaments is vital ot the team's success.

That being said, the fall is still the "off season".  If you would like to pursue another extracirricular at Dartmouth (which is totally unnecessary, by the way), the fall is the time to do it.  Feel free to go out and drink yourselves into oblivion and chase tail all night if that's how you roll--better to get that out of your system now rather than in the winter or spring.  We will not have mandaotry fuel cell workouts, at least not until after initial A-team tryouts are made, and maybe not even then.  Try to strike the right balance between fulfilling your individual needs and sacrficing those needs for the team.  For you A-guys, there will be less time or patience for individual needs in the later two terms, so do whatever you have to do now.

 Help

We'll have plenty of help this year, which is great.  the no-longer eligible bachelor Mikey Lee '00 will be around to help us in the fall before he takes over the femmes in the winter/spring.  Rodney has kindly offered his services as well, especially in the realm of junk zones.  We are also looking into getting a full-time coach who would help during practices and tournaments throughout the year.  All this is fantastic and will make our team and program stronger.

Additionally, if anyone is interested in forming another ultimate yoga class, let me know, as I am sure Britton would love to teach it again.  (Cost: about $30 for the term.)

I would also like to get another session with Jake, the varsity strength training coach.  If you'd be interested in getting some feeback on your lifting techniques and form, let me know.  (Cost: about $5 for two sessions.)

Lastly, the members of the women's team are known to occassionally dole out free massages after hard workouts that will help in the rehab process.  (Cost: social skills.)

Questions/Comments/Suggestions.  Shoot them my or Dan's way if you have any.

And get geared up and ready to go.  It's gonna be a fun season of ultimate!
