REGIONALS RECAP
(written by Mike Nowak '02)
Dartmouth, as the #6 seed, came out pretty sloppy against Middlebury in
the first game on Saturday, but this Midd team is not anywhere near the same
teams that we've battled with in recent years. Dartmouth
won 12-9.
In the second round, Dartmouth
played a slight less sloppy game against #3 Tufts (again, not quite as strong
as in the past, but still good). After trading points for most of the game, Dartmouth
was down 10-9 in a game capped at 11. But they battled back to tie it and
then got the break to win 11-10.
That put them in the semis, where they faced #2 UMass - a very talented
but inconsistent team. This game, UMass was on, and took it to Dartmouth
15-5.
Sunday was double-elimination, so even though Dartmouth
had already lost once in the tournament, they could afford to lose one more
time and still make Nationals. (The Northeast had three bids this year...
hence the funky format.)
Turns out this cushion was pretty clutch, as Dartmouth
came out extremely flat against Harvard to start the day. I think Harvard was
up 7-1 and took half 8-3, or something along those lines. Dartmouth
finally found some life in the second half, and made a nice comeback. But the
deficit was too much, and they ended up losing 15-9 or so.
So at this point, Dartmouth
had to win three games in a row to make it. First up was Wesleyan, which
ended up being an awesome game. It was close the whole way until Dartmouth
pulled ahead late to go up 14-11. Then Wesleyan came storming back to tie it
at 14's with a hard cap at 15. Wes forced a turn at double game point and had
the disc on the endzone line, but couldn't convert. After the turn, Dartmouth
marched it all the way back up the field to take another one-point victory,
15-14.
That led to a rematch with Harvard. From the start, this game was much
closer than their previous matchup. Once again, Dartmouth
led late but let Harvard come back to tie it just before the cap. But once
again, Dartmouth came through
when it counted, taking the game 14-13 and moving on to the game to go for
the first time in recent memory (ever?). As a side note, in total, they went
3-0 on double-game points on the weekend.
Tthe last game of the day was against UMass, who had simply annihilated Dartmouth
the day before. But UMass was exhausted and discouraged after losing two
straight games to go, 17-15 to Brown and 15-13 to Williams. Both teams came
out strong, but Dartmouth got the
first break to go up 7-6, and really never looked back. Once again, the final
score was 15-9.
