Application Procedures
Admission to the Cross Cultural Program is through a lottery system roughly eight months before a trip is scheduled to take place. The application proccess consists of four parts.
- Interest Meeting
Announcements of the Interest Meetings for each trip will be made to the general campus by email, campus radio stations, and posters place around campus. There will be three to four such interest meetings held in advance of each lottery. At these meetings, information will be given out about the chosen site and program, as well as applications. Attendance at an Interest Meeting is required for participation in the lottery.
-
Student Interviews
All students who apply must participate in an interview with a faculty or staff member, or a student leader. The interview will determine whether each student meets the criteria for entrance into the lottery. For entrance into the lottery, it is suggested that students successfully complete one of the following:
- Be a Cross Cultural Program veteran of any previous year.
- Participate through DCS during the current term or the previous term.
- Participate in a community service group project any term of the academic year before the lottery.
- Participate in a work project sponsored by a campus organization (i.e. Habitat for Humanity, weekend work trips, Service Trips).
- Be currently certified as an EMT.
- Demonstrate and explain some other sort of community service on the application.
- If none of the above requirements are met, a student may complete the community serivce obligation by the end of the term in which the interview takes place.
- Lottery
A lottery will be held as soon as possible following the completion of the interview process. At that time, the student will draw a number. The lower the drawn number, the higher the applicant's position in the lottery standings. For example, if an applicant draws #1, his/her application will be the first assigned to a Cross Cultural Program team. Off-campus applicants will be assigned a proxy who will draw number for the absent applicant.
- Selection and Notification
When the lottery process is completed and all applications have been processed, the applicants will be notified of their team assignments by a list posted at the Tucker Foundation.
Officer Selection
Students may also apply for officer positions, and selections will be made by a selection committee consisting of a member of a previous trip, a Tucker staff member, and the faculty sponsors for the program (NOT through the lottery). All officer applicants must have completed community service according to the lottery requirements (see above).
