Dartmouth Partners in Community Service (DPCS) Program Celebrates 10th Anniversary (2005)

Unique college partnership inspires Dartmouth students to join with Dartmouth alumni and their families in addressing problems facing our society.

"If I have had a small fraction of the impact on the children that they have had on me, then I am quite satisfied with what I have accomplished."  This reflection from a DPCS intern demonstrates the transformative impact of a DPCS experience.  Another former intern said, "For the first time, I not only interacted with homeless, HIV-positive, and substance-abusing people; I was able to offer them my help."

These special experiences also engage Dartmouth alumni mentors.  One alumnus wrote: "Significant differences can be made in people's lives with the simple act of mentoring."

As for the community service organizations, their feedback focuses on the enormous contribution, insight and enthusiasm that Dartmouth interns provided, enabling them to come closer to achieving their organization's mission and goals.

Ten years ago, DPCS sent out its first intern.  As of today, almost 250 young people have gone out to address difficult problems facing our society.  Thirty eight (38) Dartmouth classes have provided eighty-eight (88) mentors.   In 2000 the National Service and Points of Light Foundation bestowed its Points of Light Award on DPCS.

To celebrate this pioneering effort and its accomplishments, and to lay the foundation for a healthy sustainable future, major celebrations will be held on the following dates: April 16, 2005 (Sat.) at Brace Commons in Hanover, NH; April 20, 2005 (Wed.) at the Newton Marriot in Boston, MA; and April 21, 2005 (Thurs.) at the Law Office of Schulte, Roth, Zabel, 919 3rd Ave (at 57th St.) in New York, NY.  As plans are finalized, information will be posted on DPCS's website.  If specific information is sought, please contact Becky Windt (Becky.Windt@dartmouth.edu or at 603-646-2558).  For more information about DPCS, see the following Fact Sheet.
