Trophic Transfer of Toxic Metals in Aquatic Food Webs, Toxic Metals Research
Program
Research: Celia Chen studies
the way food web structure and trophic status affect the transfer of metals
and other contaminants from lake water and diet to fish. Her research involves
investigating metal levels in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish in a broad
gradient of lakes located in pristine, urban and Superfund watersheds. She
also examines the relationships between environmental and land use characteristics
on metal concentrations in lakes. She is also studying stress proteins in
zooplankton as field biomarkers of metal exposure, the potential for hybridization
in sympatric zooplankton populations, the consequences of climate change
for aquatic communities and multiple stressor effects of herbicides, pH and
food deprivation on wetland populations of zooplankton and tadpoles.
