ToxFAQs for Chromium This site on chromium, in a "frequently asked questions" format, was produced by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the ATSDR is "to prevent exposure and adverse human health effects and diminished quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites, unplanned releases, and other sources of pollution present in the environment." The FAQ is one in a series of summaries about hazardous substances and their health effects. Site includes phone contacts for additional information and a listing of related resources.

Chromium Central Created by an environmental risk management firm, this portal site presents a broad range of chromium information useful for professionals and the general public, particularly the news media and students. Includes links to news stories on chromium from media that publish online, a searchable database of more than 2000 citations from the scientific literature on the toxicological and environmental aspects of chromium, links to government documents and lists of relevant trade and professional organizations. Site includes information on nutrition, remediation, industrial hygiene, soil cleanup criteria and analytical information such as methods for extracting and measuring chromium in soils, water and air. Information on nutrition includes pro-supplement sources (such as an industry-supported group identified on this site as a "good" source of information) as well as a summary of scientific evidence challenging claims made by the chromium supplement industry.

WebElements Periodic Table: Chromium Includes extensive information on the chemical properties of chromium, from the simple to the complex. Designed for students and for curious, somewhat science-savvy citizens. Includes geology, bond enthalpies, and uses, and details properties, compounds, and interdisciplinary value.

Chromium Case Study — Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry
This ATSDR case study, while written for primary care providers and therefore full of medical terminology, provides complete information on risk, exposure, fate, effects, and treatment of chromium. Set in the Midwest, the case study follows the diagnosis and treatment of a math teacher cum handyman exposed to chromium via a variety of pathways. At times the medical terminology may impede understanding for those without an MD degree, but most of the information is simple and direct. Providers may use this site as continuing education credit, authorized by AMA, AAFP, ACEP, and AOA.

International Chromium Development Association This site by chromium developers understandably contains very little on the environmental and health effects of chromium, but very good information on the history and use of chromium. In the Publications section there is a division for Health, Safety, and Environment, with papers in full-text. Keep in mind that these are prepared by ICDA researchers for ICDA publications.

Toxic Air Contaminant Control Program Hexavalent Chromium Activity — State of California Air Resources Board This page gives information on the chrome plating industry and its environmental and health effects. The site contains information on regulations and what is happening in the political sphere to make breathing a bit safer.
