Project Team:
Nancy Serrell, M.A. (Director for Outreach and Translation)

Part of our responsibility as scientists is communicating with the public. In addition to sharing our expertise – answering telephone and e-mail queries on science topics and interacting with communities and policy-makers– we are interested in hearing about the interests and concerns of people who live in the region and encouraging their participation in the development our outreach and translation projects. Learning how our science fits the needs and interests of potential users serves as an underlying theme of our outreach projects.

Childhood lead poisoning is an environmental health concern for communities in our region. We are working with groups in both New Hampshire and Vermont to develop public policies that protect children from this preventable exposure. Arsenic in well water is of particular concern in New Hampshire, where bedrock contains elevated concentrations. We are conducting research with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the New England office of the Environmental Protection Agency to better understand the information needs of people whose wells are contaminated by arsenic. Mercury and other environmental contaminants in fish are also an environmental issue in New England, and we are working with state and federal health and environmental agencies to develop better public information on fish consumption.
