Introduction to Architecture

This course concentrates on developing abilities to translate architectural ideas into two and three-dimensional expression, utilizing freehand drawing, the actual making of objects and models and an introduction to digital technology including PhotoShop, VectorWorks and Form-Z 3-D Modelling.

The course is divided into three parts: Skills, Films, and ongoing Design Projects. Skills include the sketch, computer collage and drafting, and model making.

X-Hour film topics include architects and designers, architectural history, landscape and urban planning, building types, and design theory and process.

Design Projects build on one another. A series of design assignments allows students to explore the use of materials, the effects of natural processes, and the role of function and site as inspiration for design through object making and virtual and physical place making. Outside critics are invited to review student work.

Enrollment is limited.
