I study the trophic transfer of elements in aquatic food webs. The exchange of elements between organisms depends on principles of chemistry, physiology, and ecology. From a biological perspective, most elements can be considered either essential or nonessential, and both can be toxic. Currently, I am studying the trophic transfer of heavy metals (Hg, Zn, Pb, As, Cd, Cu, and others) in aquatic food webs. I am most interested in the effects of prey quality (nutrient composition) on metal transfer efficiency between aquatic organisms in lower trophic levels. Toward this end, I am investigating the role of somatic growth in attenuating metal accumulation.
