Coffee Cup, Fall 03

"So I woke up this morning, and there was already a thought in my head: 'damn. what a tournament. what a good day.'"
--Lorraine "Aerosmith Microphone" Ferron
So 26 of us and a badass ringer named Saul arrived a little late in New Haven yesterday. Everyone rejoiced as the party wagons rolled into town.
-Returners versus Boston University:
Our sidelines were stacked with Little Layout. After some sick zone and a lot of hucks, we emerged victorious, 13-4.
(The games got shorter at this point due to the tournament being behind schedule.)
-Returners versus The Traitor and her NYC Homies (a.k.a. Stoller and Columbia): We got behind early but finally stopped them from breaking through our zone and put together some flow. They won 8-5.
-Returners versus Yale Ramona: This game was close but they figured out how to stifle our zone o with their 4-man cup. We tied it at 4s but then they scored 4 ridiculously short points to win.
-Returners versus MIT (minus all the ones who play club in the fall): We pulled out ahead easily with quick Ds. Had some more good zone and then quick-witted force middle. Then we let them get a glimmer of hope by giving up 5 straight scores or something to bring it to universe point. We recovered our bearings and terminated them. 8-7.
-Returners versus Wesleyan: It was neck and neck all the way, with some tidy 2-throw defeats and a few scarily precise mind games, but Princess lost in the end to an inexperienced but lucky Wesleyan rosham team. that's right, folks: we roshammed for the chumpionship.
-Little Layout versus WHUFOB: we enjoyed our breasts. Rain's flair was fully exhibited. The rookies had some amazing hucks (who knew Jenn could throw too???) and scrappy, scrappy, scrappy catches. A good time was had by all.
-Little Layout versus BrownB: "And then the earth gave forth what the earth would give forth."
-Corinthians 12:8
-Little Layout versus Yale Beezus. THIS was the game of the tournament. OH MY LORD. what amazing playing. what amazing cheering. what incredible spirit. With a solid stack on O and a hot hot rookie zone on D (they learned that wednesday!!) LL showed everyone what it means to be a Princess. Beata, Ludi and Mar did some sweet handling, sending discs to hot cutters like Dana, Elisha, Kim and Caroline. Arielle had a layout score (holy shit!). Cristina came out with an authoritative D on an unsuspecting Beezus player. Gloria, Alex and Evelyn had the stickiest fingers since our jello wrestling days. Tweety formed some healthy bananas. The rookies held onto their lead until darkness fell, but then Yale snuck through on their home turf (which they can navigate even in darkness!) to pull out the windy universe point. So sad. But SOOOOO beautiful. Congrats to the lovely new members of our team. At the risk of sounding cheesy, we love you. More than we like cheese.

SAUL: you are the frosting on my cupcake, the cupcake that I buy only for the frosting. thank you SO MUCH.

See y'all at practice tomorrow!
