Terminus
02
SATURDAY
Pool play vs Georgia. Headed down as a squad psyched on playing the
University of Georgia's Ho Dawgs, last year's #1 ranked team in the country,
for the first game. Their experience, skill, and year round practice schedule
proved too much for Princess to handle, though it was a fun game and they're a
great team. They also ended up winning Terminus again this year over Duke
15-10. We got a 10 minute downpour in the middle of the game too. Georgia 13,
Princess 4?
Pool play vs. Rice U. A hot game. Rice had a lot of experienced players,
but we stuck with them for the most part, their streak came at the end and
they pulled away from us. Rice 13, Princess 6?
Game 3 vs. UNC-Wilmington. We came out with a run of the a few points, and
they got in our heads with a lot of questionable calls and trash talking We
kept up the pressure and played with them, but they came out on top, and we
scored the last point before the cap closed the game. Raindog takes one for
the team, coming down with a possible torn ACL after a hot D. We cheered Rain
instead of UNCW. UNCW 11, Princess 7?
SUNDAY
Game 1 vs. U. of Florida. We were on for this one. Our zone broke their
offense. Princess 13, Florida 6?
Game 2 vs. Princeton. Ahh, a fun game. They came off a bye and we were a
little tired. They're a fast team and we played hard, but their experience
trumped ours. Princeton 12, Princess 8.
Overall Terminus record: 1 and 4, not great, but Terminus is one of the
most elite tournaments in the country.... I'm psyched we had a team in there!
High
Tide 02
MONDAY The beach house is sweet, we move in, Mer meets back up with us, but
Lindsay gets the flu.
Game 1 vs. U. Mass. U. Mass is a young team with a couple star players, we
weren't expecting as much out of this team as we probably should have, and
they came out hot and hungry and took us by surprise with their hucks, speed,
and endurance. They also went on to win the tournament over Wellesley A. U
Mass 12, Princess 9?
Game 2 vs. Northeastern. We worked our handling and long cuts all day
against these girls. Princess 13, Northeastern 5?
Game 3 vs. Kansas. Kansas is a funny team, their captain asked us if she
could bum cigarettes. But they are motivated and experienced. We were hot,
wanted it bad, and used our speed and some great D. Princess 13, Kansas 9
TUESDAY - Liz is down for the count due to knee issues.
Game 1 vs. Princeton. We face Princeton for the second time in three days,
we knew their style, their strengths, and came out strong. The game was tight
the entire time, down to the cap which was put on just a little too early!
Princeton 11, Princess 10
Game 2 vs. Vermont. Kat comes down with the Lindsay flu. Jess comes down
with something else, and spreads it to Orsi and Abby over the next few days.
The game is messy, we're exhausted from the Princeton game, and really down in
our numbers at this point. UVM is a young team, and were also missing their
captain Hanover grad Miche. Despite sloppy O on our part, we take advantage of
whats still intact in our game. Princess 13, Vermont 6
Game 3 vs. U. Chicago. Freya goes down with a weird arm injury thing. This
game is a hard core RALLY for us after the messy UVM game. Chicago has one
incredible handler leading a team of decent, but not stay players. We come out
strong and Jess, despite not feeling well puts each of the first six scores to
mer, ariel, amy and aekta. We continue the streak, take it to half. Chicago
puts on a push after half, but we close it out well. Princess 13, Chicago 10.
WEDNESDAY
Game 1 vs. Amherst. Amherst's team name is "Barely Legal" because
they are all freshmen and sophomores. They weren't much of a problem for us,
but show promise for the future. Princess 13, Amherst 3
Game 2 vs. Wellesley B. This wasn't really Wellesley B, it was a combo of
girls from Welleseley, Illinois, and some other midwestern college - maybe
Arkansas? I forget. They were a solid squad with a lot of speed, and they
loved us for my attempted Greatest. Princess 13, Wellesley B 7.
Game 3 vs. Wellesley A. An intense game versus a GREAT group of girls. They
played a force middle game over the course of which we learned how to really
work, but it's still something we can improve. Mer really worked the cuts on
force switches, and everyone took her lead by the end. They had a lot of subs,
and despite playing our brains out, they came out on top. Wellesley A 12,
Princess 7.
THURSDAY - we played all of the 9 other teams at High Tide, so Thursday was
elimination tournmant play. We were the 4th seed.
Quarterfinals vs. #5 seed Kansas. We faced the team we had already beaten,
but this time with serious subbing problems, exacerbated by me playing on a
pulled quad, Jess feeling shitty, and Ariel spraining her ankle halfway
through the game. A fun game though - highlights: Mer's HUGE layout grab out
the side of the endzone, and the entire mens B-team doing the "Peel
Bananas" cheer for us, lining both sides of the field.
Friday we rest up, watch Aekta and Haley play in the Rookie game, and watch
Amy and Lindsay in the All-Star game. We decide to bag on Southerns, the last
tournament, because of general team brokeness and sickness. Maximum players
over break =15. Unafflicted, not absent players at end =3, yay for Amy
"Doesn't even go to Dartmouth" Greer, Aekta "Q-tip" Shah,
and Haley "Pieface" Peckett.
Wellesley,
Spring 02
This is a story of 19 lovely princesses that traveled to Boston yesterday
to rock the Millyfest Tourney.. buckle your seatbelts folks, here we go: It
was a history-making day on many accounts. It was the first time we've brought
two teams to a tournament and it was also the first tournament Wellesley has
ever hosted. We also had a bunch of personal firsts on our team which I will
get into later. This is an account of the A team, the B team will come out
shortly.
Game 1: Princess 11, Wellesley B 1 We started off with a strong victory
against this new B team, despite the fact that we played the whole game savage
(thanks to erica stoller's renowned punctualness). Our flow was a little
sleepy, but catches through our muddled cutting we were able to dance around
their D and make it look pretty nice towards the end of the game.
Game 2: Princess 13, Northeastern 2 Northeastern tried to intimidate us
with thier hieght, but we had a sub, so we were having nothing of it. We had
some problems with drops, but our flow picked up alot from the first game.
Mase (erica s.) had a great layout catch in the enzone that set the tone for
the game. Mer also had an attempted greatest in the enzone, it would have been
glorious if her cleat hadn't gotten in the way. Jess came out of no where with
the cheer ideas and we wowed them with a rendition of Summer of '69.
Game 3: Wellesley A 12, Princess 7 We came into this game fired up and
ready for the challenge. After playing them twice in Savannah we knew it'd be
one of our toughest games of the day. We kept it close during the first half,
but they took it at 7-5. They threw a middle force at us, which we responded
to well and even tried a split stack for a point or two. During the second
half we threw on a zone D that they had trouble with. They proceeded to throw
a cup on us the next point and our handling did well against it. Despite our
efforts, we were plagued by more drops and they managed to pull away for the
victory. Jess, our new cheering superstar, helped us come up with an inspiring
version of Longview.
Game 4: Semifinals - Wellesley Allumnae 11, Princess 3 The Wellesely allums
are some tall, wise players. We could have run better with them for sure, but
they were quick off of the starting block and our intensity dropped. They had
this one handler with unbelievable throws and she broke our zone a couple
times with an awesome forehand huck. The game was a little shaken up when two
of their players had a rough head-on collision, but they kept up the intensity
which we seemed to lack.
Game 5, the game for 3rd place: Princess 13, Wellesley B 2 The erica's and
the 04's seemed to score most of the points in this game. We had several
erica-erica connections. The Wellesley B team was playing savage at this
point, but we'd met them before and our cutting and flow was much prettier
this time around. We finished up the day to the aroma of the BBQ. In general,
it was a great day for us. Having one sub seemed to work well and we certainly
grew as a team throughout the day. We will be taking Yale Cup by storm next
weekend.
I can't wait to hear the b team report... from the rumors that were going
around yesterday it sounded like they had a terrific day as well. Live it,
Love it, Lay it out, linds ps. if you see mer or mase around, be sure to ask
them about thier hill-rolling incident. pps. we love you Jen for bringing
pizza!!!!!! quotes of the day: "i wouldn't recommend having sex with
me" - mer "my nipples are frEEzing!" - betsy "i'm not
smart, guys." - mase
Yale
Cup, Spring 02
Princess found our way through the fog on saturday morning, pumped and
ready to rock Yale Cup. The fields were soft and the wind was just about
right. Here's what went down...
Saturday Game 1 vs. Cornell: We both came out strong but Cornell took it
quickly to half. We had a come back rally in the second half and we slowed
them down with our zone, but it wasn't enough to crack this solid team.
Cornell 13, Princess 6.
Game 2 vs. Salisbury: This was by far the best team we've seen in a while.
They're tall, they've got game. They ate up our mistakes and ran away with the
game. Salisbury 13, Princess 2
Game 3 vs. Wesleyan: We came out of the Salisbury thirsty for some victory
and so we fired it up for game 3. We played some solid zone D and had some
great freshmen highlights. Freshmen scores, freshmen cups, and a point block
by orsi! Princess 13, Wesleyan 3
Game 4 vs. Tufts: Tufts continues to be one of our biggest challenges of
the northeast. We held them in the first half with our zone and the game was
close. but then they took it away in the second half and we lost our momentum
somwhere inbetween. Tufts 13, Princess 4 We ended up 11th going into Sunday,
which put us in the B bracket.
Sunday: B bracket Semis vs. Middlebury: We were well rested and roarin'
coming into this came and scored 3 quick ones right off the bat. Then
middlebury found their game and stepped it up quite a bit. They had an
incredible long game and a lefty handler that could fsu with her breaks. They
took half and we decided to juice and fire-it. We launched a solid come back
in the second half, but it wasn't quite enough. MIddlebury 13, Princess 8
Consulation game vs. Haverford: The points went similarly in this game, but
we were missing a few players due to injury. Again we launched a nice come
back towards the end, topped off by an underwear point to finish the game.
Haverford was distracted, but they managed to focus enough to win. Haverford
13, Princess 7 We continue to see our young players improve in big ways. Once
we smooth out our man o some more , we will be a force to be reckoned with.
Our zone d and o was solid this weekend.
Sectionals will be exciting, I can't wait. Live it, love it, lay it out,
emilinds
p.s. i know i missed some highlights here and there.. feel free to add on
to this report. a few quotes: "i'd be a good horn. I'm gonna be a horn
when I grow up." - bipolar "what's a wing job?" - sprite
"it'd have to be somthing with 3 people, two wings and somone in the
middle.. you know, the pivot." -bullet
Sectionals,
Spring 02
garripay treated us well today, we had a fun fun time in the cold wind.
game1 - vs Williams A. WHUFO was hot as usual and we played well against
them. hmm. well, maybe its my senility setting in again, but i don't really
remember all that much ... or the score... it was whufo yes? we had a kickass
cheer for them and they offended our mothers and grandmothers. they won, the
score was maybe 11-6??
game2 - vs Midd B. whoo hoo! we lived up to my fall employment and bageled
them - 13-0. we worked a bunch on the monster clam like defense which was fun.
they had spirit for playing almost savage, one of their girls got carted off
in an ambulance the game before.
game3 - vs Amherst. a spring break rematch, they've got some pretty ugly
yet fairly effective handling, and are fast on their toes. we worked on our
clam some more, and played okay. i think the wind picked up during this game,
so drops and swilly throws were frustrating, but we stayed strong and took it
away - 13-5 (???, i can never really remember scores).
game4 - vs Midd A. oh man this was a sweet game. winds were big but we were
tight. we came out of the gate with a 3 - 0 run (sound familiar?), which i
partially attribute to the fact that they started playing in poofy jackets,
lame! but they turned it on LP style and got the next 4. we ran with them,
trading downwind points till they took the half 7-5, and the cap went on -
game to 9, with us starting downwind. things were looking rough but we rallied
scoring another upwind point and holding up till it was 8-8 - POINT FOR THE
UNIVERSE!!!! again, we were downwind, pulling. a sweet pull followed by sweet
D had us within striking distance (so close...) but it wasn't in the cards,
midd took the wind and the point, and hence the game 9-8.
game5 - never happened, UVM was hurting and decided they'd rather leave it
to point differentials, giving us the 3rd place for the day (and uvm 4th) this
blitz is dedicated to kat's mom for bringing us hot chocolate and lou's
doughnuts. mmmmm...
good job today everyone, and props to the b team for playing almost savage
against some tough teams. anyone wanna give a report? sugarbullet
Regionals,
Spring 02
saturday, first game vs. UMass - we came out hot against a small and
scrappy umass. it was really windy, and we traded downwind points for a while.
our zone was so hot it hurt. but eventually they got an upwind point on the
one handler's sweet forehand huck. we bounced right back though, traded two
more downwinders, and then scored an upwind point. unfortunately, we couldn't
hold, Umass got another upwind and took the the half. second half, the wind
died down a bit, and we ran with them, basically trading points irregardless
of the wind. but umass held their lead and took the game 15-12.
second round we chalked up a win against no one.
third round - vs. wellesley - we came out even more fired up than against
umass and started up 3-0. we foiled their force middle strategy by running a
split stack all game. despite our early lead though, we let up and they
rallied back to 3-3. we didn't let them in our heads, and turned it back on
regaining the lead. we played hot, with few drops, sick grabs, hot puts (esp.
hucks to erica) and took the half 8-5. after the half, although we were
determined not to let up, we let up and wellesley rallied to 8-7 or so. we
turned it back on, and were neck and neck for the rest of the game and
eventually had a game point at 14-13. but they got the next two points and
took the game 15-14. it was a heart breaker. really really fun all around, and
a hot game, but a tough loss.
good playing all around, we really worked it! and thanks THANKS to all
those who came out to cheer us on! bully jay
