East Wheelock is a community which provides Dartmouth undergraduates with a residential experience designed to enhance both their academic and intellectual opportunities in a vibrant and challenging living environment. The Ledyard Apartments offer a substance-free program and each unit has a small kitchen. Students interested in the East Wheelock program must submit an East Wheelock Application by Thursday, April 3, 2008.
After applications are reviewed, students will be notified by e-mail whether or not they are accepted to the program. For students accepted to the program there will be an East Wheelock Cluster Room Draw on May 1, 2008.
Select room types such as apartments, suites, quads, and singles with connecting bathrooms will be designated gender neutral housing starting Fall 2008. Specific locations are highlighted in green on the floor plans. These specially designated rooms will be available for selection at room draw, regardless of sex or gender, and provided all beds can be filled. This program provides a living/learning environment where residents learn about and explore issues of gender identity in a supportive community. The floor sponsors events open to the whole student body to encourage respectful conversations on gender identity and expression. Students interested in the community, located ont he ground floor of McLane Hall, should fill out the application available on the ORL website and due April 17, 2008. The Dartmouth Inter-faith Living and Learning Community (IFLLC) seeks to bring students from a diversity of religious and moral traditions, ranging from the breadth of the world's religious traditions to agnostics, seekers, humanists and the "spiritual but not religious." The group will make a commitment to the experience of living together and learning from one another. There will be many informal opportunities for conversation, participation and listening as well as weekly structured discussion. By building spiritual and philosophical understanding in an ongoing and relaxed setting, participants will have the opportunity to develop lasting relationships across faith lines. The IFLLC will further Dartmouth's commitment to religious diversity and support the ongoing creation of a friendly environment for faith exploration. The Fayerweather Residence Halls are home to a program that is designed to support sophomores in declaring a major. Residents who live in the cluster are provided with programs, advising, and other resources that target the unique academic decision-making needs that arise during the sophomore year. Residents will have the opportunity to interact with peer advisors and will regularly receive helpful information, such as reminders about deadlines and tips for success. Current residents have greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to live with their classmates and participate in a sophomore living experience. 2008-2009 will be the third year of the program and we strongly encourage sophomores to consider the Fayerweathers and participate in the sophomore program
Richardson Hall and the Ledyard Apartments in East Wheelock are available for those students who desire to live in an environment that is substance-free. Students living in a substance-free area agree that they and their guests will not use or possess alcohol, tobacco products, or illicit drugs in the building. They also agree that if they use such substances outside of the substance-free living area, their behavior upon their return will not have a negative impact upon residents or property.
The Sustainable Living Center (SLC) is a brand new student initiative focused on sustainability for students looking for an eco-conscious housing alternative. Students living in the SLC will learn how to reduce their environmental impact by minimizing energy inputs and waste outputs and will engage in academic a nd social programs including communal dinners, discussion groups and workshops. Located in North Hall, the SLC will be a community center for interdisciplinary studies and experiential learning.
