These images were taken with the new 10-meter Southern African Large Telescope, or SALT

This image shows an ancient star cluster of several hundred thousand stars over 100 light years across and located in the outskirts of the Milky Way galaxy about 15,000 light years away.

This image displays a face-on spiral galaxy, which shows its reddish central region rich in older stars surrounded by spiral arms containing bluer, younger stars.

This is a picture of a small 'open' star cluster in our galaxy, which formed about one billion years ago.
