Dartmouth College President James Wright announced Oct. 16 that the College has received a $16-million gift commitment from Fannie and Alan Leslie, of California. The gift, which will be in the form of outright and estate gift commitments, is one of the largest individual gifts in the College's history.
"I am very pleased to announce this gift commitment from the Leslies," said President Wright. "Over the years the Leslies have been good friends of Dartmouth, and I'm sure many others at the College share my gratitude to them."
Alan Leslie, M.D., is a 1930 graduate of Dartmouth. He received his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1933. Mrs. Leslie's grandfather, William Fellows Swain, graduated from Dartmouth in 1850.
The Leslie gift will support three new initiatives at Dartmouth:
The "Fannie and Alan Leslie Center for the Humanities at Dartmouth College" will provide significant support to the Humanities through scholarship, such as colloquia, seminars, symposia, and conferences as well as activities for students, faculty, and visitors relating to the Humanities.
The "Dartmouth Conferences," to be held every two years, will address important issues of broad academic, social, and cultural interest and relevance, bringing together nationally and internationally recognized scholars, experts, authorities in any of the disciplines or interdisciplines. The Dean of Faculty will serve as Director of the Dartmouth Conferences.
The "Fannie and Alan Leslie Professorship in Medicine" will enable the Medical School to attract and to retain the nation's best genetics faculty and scientists. The Leslie chair will be dedicated to the study of genetics with particular attention to the relationship of pharmacology to genetics.
"I believe these programs will advance in a most significant way the mission of Dartmouth College," Wright added. "They will bridge our interests and our strengths, from the life sciences to the arts and humanities, and by extension, will enhance the notable contributions Dartmouth makes to society. The College deeply appreciates the Leslies' vision in providing the resources to fashion these unique opportunities.
"I know the Leslies will be pleased with the celebration of the Humanities Center's inaugural symposium later this week. In November we will also celebrate the launching of the Dartmouth Conferences."
