Next week we'll be getting some additional lab space in Rm 204 Vail.  Things were getting a little crowded so it will be nice to expand into some new space.  This space was given to us by Dr. Nick Jacobs who will be staying in his office in 204A.  Thanks Nick!  Come by an take a look.

We just returned from our Departmental Retreat at the Minary Center on Squam Lake (the lake from the movie "On Golden Pond") in central New Hampshire.  Most of the attendees were from Dartmouth, but we also had visitors from the UMass Med. School, Smith College, UVM, and Middlebury College.  Here are a couple of pictures from the weekend.

Check out group photos from our recent trip to Big Sky Montana for the Biofilms 2000 Conference.  It was a terrific conference in a wonderful location!

Also, yesterday was Class Day at Dartmouth Medical School.  The guest speaker was John Irving,

Here's a picture of Manolo Espinosa from his recent visit to my lab.  Manolo and I were post-docs together.

I just returned from a trip visiting Manolo in Granada Spain.

What do the grad students and post-docs do in their spare time in Hanover in the winter?
Build a snow-person, of course!

Check out the newest images from our microscope.  The image is of P. aeruginosa with a GFP-expressing plasmid forming microcolonies on a epithelial cell line that lacks a functional CFTR protein.

Happy New Year!

The new year has started off well.

Two students, Nicky Caiazza and Niles Donegan, are rotating in the lab.

Sherry Kuchma, a fellow Badger, will be joining the lab as a post-doc on Feb. 1.

It looks like it will be a fun, but busy, term.

A recent reference I came across convinces me that there really is nothing new under the sun!

"...it is quite evident that for the most part water bacteria are not
free floating organisms, but grow upon submerged surfaces"

(1933) 25:277-287

Some recent good news.  Thien-Fah (Thienny) Mah from the University of Toronto will be joining the lab this spring as a Post-doc to work on biofilms in P. aeruginosa.

The lab is up & running we are just waiting for the microscope.  Mary Ellen Davey started in lab today and we had our first official lab lunch.  The lab also has a rotating graduate student, Shannon Hinsa from the University of Wisconsin, who is working on the P. fluorescens project.

Welcome to Hanover!  Well, the lab is cleaned up, ready to go, and the equipment is pouring in.  I'm looking forward to the start of the semester, rotation students, and the arrival of two post-docs - Mary Ellen Davey from Michigan State University and Sherry Kuchma from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
