Yashi Ahmed, Assistant Professor of Genetics,
Dartmouth Medical School, and her laboratory team have discovered a
striking turnabout role for a gatekeeper known to put on the brakes for
colon cancer. Flaws in a gene called adenomatous polyposis coli (APC), which
normally prevents excessive cell growth, are thought to trigger development of

Dartmouth Medical School has nucleated a distinguished Department of Genetics, poised to exploit and contribute to the explosive growth in information and its application to solving problems in biological systems.
This department has a unique role in research, teaching, and clinical missions, and provides a novel and distinctive interface with Dartmouth College. With anticipated additions to the existing dozen primary appointments over the next five years, Genetics at Dartmouth will increase in both breadth and depth to fulfill a mission that includes development of individual strengths as well as collaborations among existing departments and programs.
