At Punalu'u After High School Graduation

That night we had
a bonfire on the beach.
Gay too drunk
and perhaps me too,
we went swimming at Johnson Pond
to sober up.
Fresh water, icy on naked skin.
We played hide and seek among the reeds.
Emerging, I stood shivering in the moonlight.
Gay, laughing, dried me with a towel,
warmed me with kisses.
She took my hand
and led me, still naked,
onto the golf course,
spread the towel on the soft grass
and we made love
under the stars.
