During the past term four Dartmouth Fellows and six outside Fellows have been meeting in a post-doctoral seminar on the topic of Converting Cultures:Religion, Ideology, and Transformations of Modernity--focusing on the Late Ottoman Empire and Republican Turkey, 19th- and 20th-century India, and 20th-century Japan. Joining us during the term were Gauri Vishwanatan, Serif Mardin, John Treat, James Laine, and Naoki Sakai. We were funded by the Leslie Humanities Institute at Dartmouth College, the Dickey Center, and the Japan Foundation.
Now, Dec 1-3, to culminate the seminar, we are holding a symposium on the topic with c. 18 outside papers. (The seminar papers and these will eventually go into a volume with the title of the seminar.) The Interlocutors will be Selim Deringil, Peter van der Veer, and Takashi Fujitani.
