Northwestern University
Northwestern University Library and Northwestern University Information Technology had been frequent collaboration partners before the new 2East space was conceived in late 1999. The Technology in Learning and Teaching (TiLT) program for faculty, the Northwestern University New Media Center, and a number of critical campus-wide information systems, including NUInfo and the Voyager NUCat online catalog were all joint Library/IT projects, before we co-located our departments in 2EAST.
2East was developed as a wonderful new scholarly technology service for Northwestern faculty---but it also was a much-needed solution to some nagging practical problems. The Academic Technologies unit had been without a campus home for almost a year, ever since the Vogelback Computing Center had been demolished to make room for a new nanotechnology research center. Collection Management bibliographers were scattered throughout the library in a number of cramped, isolated offices. Digital Media Services, a unit of the Marjorie I. Mitchell Multimedia Center, had outgrown its small lab space in another corner of the library. So, the time was right in 1999 to look for a more comprehensive solution to the support of Northwestern faculty by the front-line support staff from both the Library and IT.
There are three major departments co-loacted within the new 2East space at Northwestern: Academic Technologies, Digital Media Services and Collection Management. Within Academic Technologies' space are found staff offices and project workspace for research computing, distributed education, course management, and specialized media production activities. There is also a new Visualization Lab and a dedicated video-editing bay that has been funded by Avid Technology.
The Assistant University Librarian for Collection Management and the bibliographers for most of the general research collections are housed in 2East. These subject specialists collaborate with their technologist colleagues on faculty teaching and research projects.
Digital Media Services houses a drop-in media development facility for faculty, staff and graduate students and also provides digitization services for networked course delivery.
