Week Five: Oct. 20

20 October. Karen reporting: Today was the first day of team reports in Pompeii, and oh what a day it was. Between the schizophrenic weather and the marathon nature of the lectures, we were all pretty wiped out by the evening. We started with Maya’s fabulous presentation of the House of the Faun, and ended with my own discussion of the Room of the Mysteries in, of all places, the Villa of the Mysteries. Highlights of the day include Brian’s telling of the tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers who, despite their utter devotion to one another, perished tragically in a natural disaster. You may in fact, gentle reader, have heard of said disaster… see, there was this volcano… well, that part is dull. And, for the sake of all that is holy, if you come to Pompeii, do not interrupt legitimate discussion to inquire as to the location of the “petrified bodies.” Um. Anyway, back to Brian’s story. Suffice it to say, those engaged columns never got to realize their dreams of a white picket fence and the pattering of little capitals around the atrium. The other highlight was our professor’s near decapitation of one of the rather unfortunate tourists who perpetually populate the site, interrupting a student presentation to shout that “abbiamo permesso!” Matt, Myung-Hee, Joanna, Ariel, Sophia, and Sarah all did fabulous jobs with their respective sites, too.
