Week Two: Oct. 1

01 October. Cordelia reporting: Happy 21st birthday, Brian! Today we journeyed to San Giuliano, where we explored a not very well known series of Etruscan tombs. We wandered into chambers dug directly into the tufa cliffs, hiked up and down a ravine, toured a small Roman bath complex, and gazed at the place where Professor Ulrich once tried to camp and was foiled by a group of wild boars and another group of irate Italian police officers. We also walked up an ancient staircase carved into a cliff, admired the simple yet elegant carvings of a deer and a dog in the stone above the stairs, and used a not-so-ancient but quite dilapidated wooden staircase to get back to the bus. We returned to Tarquinia, where some people went back to the museum or the necropolis to finish doing research for their papers. In the late afternoon, a small group went to the beach for a final swim/frisbee toss, and at about 7:00 we all met for a reception on the terrace to celebrate Brian’s birthday and to bid farewell to our friendly and faithful bus driver, Renato. Against the backdrop of a sunset over the Tyrrhenian Sea, we drank champagne and chianti and toasted Brian, Renato, and the trip in general. It was a pleasant last evening for our first road trip: tomorrow we leave Tuscany for Rome.
