Specialties, Gene transcription and chromatin structure

Research: Lynn Sheldon's scientific interests include the study of molecular mechanisms underlying steroid hormone receptor-mediated gene regulation and apply that to understanding the molecular basis of disease that includes cancer and other endocrine-associated diseases. Environmental levels of arsenic have been implicated in the development of cancer and various metabolic diseases and they can act as endocrine disruptors. One project in the lab is aimed at determining how low levels of arsenic, commonly found in the environment, disrupt steroid receptor-mediated gene activation via the activation of signal transduction pathways that lead to direct modifications on chromatin, the structure in which genes are found.
