Areas of Expertise: Epidemiology and children's health

Member, Epidemiology and Children's Health Group, Center for Environmental Health Sciences at Dartmouth

Research: James Sargent's current research involves evaluating media and marketing influences on adolescent smoking. He is principal investigator of a research study examining visual media influences on adolescent smoking behavior. The aims of this NIH-sponsored study are to describe tobacco use in a large sample of contemporary motion pictures and to determine if viewing tobacco use in movies is associated with adolescent smoking. In another NIH-sponsored study, he developed and implemented a tobacco use prevention intervention for rural school children in grades K-12. In addition, he has conducted various studies in childhood lead poisoning, including an evaluation of calcium as a nutritional preventative agent for lead poisoning and several ecological studies identifying geographical predictors of lead poisoning.
