Amy Allen is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Women’s and Gender Studies and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Dartmouth College, where she has taught since 1997.  She holds a PhD and MA in philosophy from Northwestern University, and a BA in philosophy from Miami University (OH). 

Professor Allen's research interests are in 20th century Continental philosophy, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of critical social theory, poststructuralism, and feminist theory. She has published widely on the topics of power, subjectivity, agency, and autonomy in the work of Foucault, Habermas, Butler and Arendt, including two books: The Power of Feminist Theory: Domination, Resistance, Solidarity (Westview, 1999) and The Politics of Our Selves: Power, Autonomy, and Gender in Contemporary Critical Theory (Columbia University Press, 2008). Her current research project focuses on the relationship between power and reason in the critical theory tradition.

Professor Allen is a member of the executive committee of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy (SPEP) book review editor of the journal Constellations and Series Editor of the Columbia University Press series New Directions in Critical Theory.
